I read an article about some idiot legislator in California putting forth a bill to ban spanking. The penatlies were along the lines of the state taking away the kids and the parent(s) getting jail time.
My view, as if you hadn't already guessed? Destroying lives and destroying families to sooth the ego of some legislator is an extraordinarilly bad idea. Hard to believe that some people think that jailing parents and ripping aprt familes is an acceptable idea.
Oh, by the way, spanking is not the same thing as child abuse.
If she was really interested in fixing the problem she'd be in there coming up with ideas that wouild allow parents to enforce good behavior without spanking.
As far as the schools go... Given that too many schools are already quite happy to advocate drugging our kids and that they also seem to like the idea of taking kids away from parents for whatever reason, well, I don't think I care much for the idea of their admininstering certain forms of punishment.
For the record we've never spanked our kids, but I was spanked as a child. At certain times for certain kids I think it's necessary and the state can keep its nose out of the family's business.
Schools DO need to enforce good behavior. If we're going to send our kids to school (homeschooling is a far superior idea, but not all of us can do it) then some need for discipline is required. For the safety of the other kids, the sanity of the teachers, and to improve the learning environment good behavior has to be enforced.
One of the reasons our schools are so bad is that they aren't allowed to enforce discipline.
Hmmm... maybe a little military discipline. Get too far out of line and you can drop and pound out 20 or 50. Or a little (or a lot) of KP duty.

Rubbish. Thats what it is. Complete and absolute rubbish. How does one ban spanking? Im 17 years old, and growing up in today's society has opened my eyes to some of the idiotness of some parents. Parents who don't spank their children are giving their children the impression that they can run around wildly and create havoc without the fear of being diabled for the next couple of days. THe only thing their parents give them is a warning, a quick scolding, and a grouding. Wow. Grounding. What does that do? Nothing because eventually you get back what you lost. Now corporal punishment. If we had that in schools, there would be a drastic changes. How many kids would skip third period if they knew that their administrator had the right and power to dish out corporal punishment to them infront the entire school. None. But no, instead we suspend them and send them to in school suppension, so they miss even more class time.
And you are right, spanking is not the same thing as child abuse. But the spoiled politicians who have never been spanked in their lives would swear on the Bible that it is.
Jackjen raises a good point. With the anti-spanking laws you're guilty until proven guiltier and most of us don't have the resources to fight the bottomless pockets of the state.
And when someone accuses you out of spite, regardless of the truth of the matter, it's going to be expensive to defend yourself.
The laws here create a far greater problem than anything they are trying to fix.
Hi Shaeosaurus - They wouldn't swear on the Bible because most of them have no use for the Bible. As for the rest, I think you're right. Whenever punishment is used the kids have to respect it and respect that it will be consistently administered. And the punishment has to be severe enough to discourage the activity.
These anti-discipline laws are creating havoc here in Australia. We are now reaping the consequences of a generation taught that they have "rights", but no mention of the responsibilities that go with those rights!
The lack of discipline in our homes and schools has bred a generation of teens with little respect for authority at any level. The sad part is that many of them have little self-respect either.

Discipline delivered with love is not child abuse!
...and this is the very reason why we should pray for those in authority (i.e., ignorance, delusional thinking, etc.).
This also leads me to believe that pharmaceutical companies may be behind such decision-making. In my opinion, it is these companies (along with correctional institutions) that ultimately stand to benefit from such foolish and near-sighted policies...again, the future well-being of children is being sacrificed on the altar of greed...

You CAN dicepline children without resorting to voilence. YES, violence! If you take your hand, and hit it against someone's body it is classed as violence, if you do this in order to 'get what youw ant' from the person, it's called bullying. This isn't about spanking, it is about parents being too lazy to use less harmful methods of teaching. (Time out, conviscation). If you spank, you're a bad parent. End of.
Somebody has to control us too and make sure our kids are safe, even if we don't the fact that we are not allowed to spank our kids. Our actions have and should have consequences. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE TAUGHT THAT.

I agree with your comments, I remember when a parent could soank their kid and not be critized for it. but now, here in WA a friend of mines husband spanked her two teenage sons, because they were about to get kicked out of school for fighting and the youngest was terrifying a teacher there. Her husband was a arrested and charged with abuse, she was investigated by the state for child abuse and neglect, and told that her sons could no longer live with her. So she had to send them to live with the biological father (he's happy he doesn't have to pay her child support anymore), and her husband had to take a deal or they were going to arrest her and charge her for the same thing and take their 5 yr old and place that child in foster care.
Talk about a torn family, All because her sister who didn't like her husband who told the teenagers to call the police and they all got together and got their story straight to make it believeable to the police. Now one of sons no longer lives with the bio-father and the other one does. Talk about stupid, why are these legislators so caught up with controling peoples homes, I thought this was the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave", more like "Land of the Do What I Say and the Home of Or Else".
